Process Equipment for Paper, Pulp & Wood Products
Belt dryers, industrial fans, screw conveyors and material handling equipment for paper mill sludge drying, bark processing, wood residue management and pulp mill auxiliary systems.
Paper and pulp mills generate significant quantities of sludge from effluent treatment — primary sludge (fibre and filler from the paper machine white water system) and biological sludge (from activated sludge wastewater treatment). Belt dryers are widely used to reduce sludge moisture from 70–80% to 10–20% before incineration or composting, significantly reducing disposal volume and improving combustion value.
Bark and wood residues from debarking operations are typically collected, dried and burned as biomass fuel in the mill's own power boiler. Industrial fans handle the large air volumes required in paper machine dryer sections, ventilation systems and air handling units. Screw conveyors transport wet sludge, bark and fibrous residues in continuous-flow applications without the blockage issues associated with belt or chain conveyors in sticky materials.
Key Process Challenges
- 1
Wet, sticky sludge with variable fibre content — blockage-prone in standard conveyors
- 2
Odour management from biological sludge drying — enclosed dryers with exhaust treatment
- 3
Integration with mill energy balance — using waste steam from paper machine for drying
- 4
Corrosion from acids and bleaching chemicals in mill water circuits

Primary sludge and biological sludge behave differently — fibre content, adhesiveness and moisture vary not only between mills but between treatment stages in the same plant. Belt dryer design parameters are set to the actual sludge analysis, not a standard curve. Shaftless screw conveyors prevent the wrap-around blockages that develop with fibrous materials in shaft-type designs.
