## Crystallization Route Selection

**Evaporative crystallization** — when:
- Solubility is not strongly temperature-dependent (NaCl, ammonium sulphate)
- Large evaporation load from dilute feed
- Connected to existing evaporator train

**Cooling crystallization** — when:
- Solubility drops sharply with temperature (citric acid, potassium nitrate, sodium acetate)
- Heat-sensitive material (pharmaceutical API)
- No steam available; cooling water or chilled water available

**Combined (evaporation + cooling)** — maximum yield from both levers simultaneously.

## Downstream Package

A complete crystallization plant includes:
1. Feed pre-concentrator (evaporator) — to reach saturation
2. Crystallizer — to produce crystals
3. Thickener / hydrocyclone — to increase crystal slurry density
4. Centrifuge (pusher, peeler, or decanter) — to separate crystals from mother liquor
